Chairman’s Newsletter Spring 2022

Dear Member,
From a hesitant start the pace of life in the city is beginning to build up again and in our club we have started the climb back to, hopefully, where we were before March 2020.

In October last year a group of us enjoyed a guided tour of the Globe Theatre in Southwark. An ideal choice to restart our social life with as it was largely an external event. November saw the return of the Lord Mayor’s Show to the City’s streets and although the pandemic had robbed us of the opportunity to celebrate our club’s 90th anniversary with a float in 2020’s show we were able to make up for it in 2021 by once more enjoying lunch in the Guildhall Members’ dining room.

Another outdoors gathering followed in January when we joined the congregation of the ward church, St Magnus the Martyr and our friends from Southwark Cathedral, on London Bridge for the annual blessing of the River Thames. And in March there was a well-attended visit to the St John’s Museum and arched gateway in Clerkenwell.

These were small steps back but on 8th April this year it was fully back to business as usual when we were once more able to hold our civic lunch in the wonderful surroundings of Fishmongers’ Hall. Our principal civic guest was Alderman and Sheriff Alison Gowman and our guests of honour
were our club President and his Lady, Sir Alan and Lady Gilly Yarrow. As Sir Alan will be standing down as Alderman for the Ward of Bridge and Bridge Without during the summer this was our opportunity to say thank you to them both for no less than 15 years of service to the ward, friendship and support to the club and the magnificent Mayoralty of 2014-15. Our thanks go to Andrew Dyke for his peerless organisation of the event and you are invited to follow the link below to view the wonderful portfolio of photographs taken on the day to see what a splendid occasion it was.

There will be one more chance to enjoy Sir Alan’s company when he presides at our Annual General Meeting on Wednesday 8th June. This will be held in Committee Room 2 at Guildhall, commencing at 6.00pm so please make a note of this in the diary. A formal calling notice, officers’
reports and committee nomination papers will follow in early May.

I look forward to seeing you there.
With sincere best wishes
